Spanning some 130 miles the Stepping Out network of footpaths across North Kesteven is one that goes back many years and one that has since evolved alongside Spires and Steeples and Ridges and Furrows. With some 28 separate walks on the Stepping Out Network alone many of the routes can be combined, extended or walked in part. This requires good access, clearly signed waymarking and promotion of the walks encouraging people to use them. This is made possible through a maintenance program that includes footpath mowing, auditing and carrying out reactive work as required. Where contracted  mowing is generally carried out between April and October on a monthly basis, whilst an annual audit of each walk route is carried out November to March recording the location and condition of walk furniture such as way marker posts, discs, finger blades, bridges and stiles and any remedial work required. Mowing of the footpaths is carried out using a small Alpine tractor and flail and where access is limited self-propelled pedestrian mowers. Stepping Out Car Parks are made presentable through regular litter picking, grass and hedge cutting, tree pruning, signage and fence repairs. Promotion of the walks is achieved through monthly Hill Holt Wood Ranger led walks and the organisation of and working with other partners in staging the annual North Kesteven Walking Festival.
